Curtis was born in 1952 and raised near Mountain, North Dakota. He is the grandson of pioneer Icelandic immigrants, and is the third generation operating from the original quarter section they homesteaded in 1883. He is in business with two older brothers, with interests in farming, ranching and earthmoving construction. Curtis manages the ranching segment of the business, focusing on a registered Simmental breeding stock herd of 250 cows. Curtis graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, and he is a licensed private pilot. He is the president of the Icelandic Communities Association, the sponsoring organization of the Deuce of August Icelandic Celebration held annually in Mountain. This is the oldest ethnic Celebration in the state of North Dakota, and attracts thousands of visitors each year to the small town of less than 100 people. He is Co-Chairman of the Mountain Community Center Capital Campaign Committee. He also serves as president of the Thingvalla Cemetery Association and of Logberg Heimskringla USA, Inc., which is the US affiliate of the Logberg Heimskringla Icelandic newspaper headquartered in Winnipeg. Curtis has served on the board of the North Dakota Beef Cattle Improvement Association and was named the Commercial Producer of the Year for North Dakota in 1994. Curtis is the father of two children––Renata, an attorney who is an assistant State’s Attorney for Cass County, North Dakota, and Drew, who is a loan officer for United Valley Bank in Argyle, Minnesota. Curtis is married to Björk Eiríksdóttir from Iceland, and is a step-father to three children-stepsons, Heimir, of Reykjavik, Iceland, Einar, a sophomore at Edinburg High School, and stepdaughter, Linda, a sophomore at Mayville State University.
